Carcass and Organ Weights of Broiler Chickens Fed Diets Containing Velvet Bean Seed Meal (Mucuna sloanei) Mix with Enzyme (Maxi-Grain)

A study was conducted to the carcass characteristics and organ weights of broiler chickens fed raw and variously processed Mucuna sloanei seed meal based diet. One hundred and fifty day old broiler chicks obtained from a reputable hatchery (Fidan hatchery, Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria) were used.The birds were allowed to stabilize for 10days before being randomly assigned to five dietary treatments each replicated into 3 of 10 birds per replicate in a completely randomized design (C.R.D). Enzyme used was maxigrain. Five experimental diets were formulated, thus; T₁ (control), T₂ (raw), T₃ (raw with enzyme), T₄ (boiled with enzyme), and T₅ (toasted with enzyme), and the inclusion level was 10% for all treatments. Feed and water were given ad-libitum throughout the duration of the experiment which lasted for 49 days. Parameters considered were; carcass characteristics and organ weight. There were significant (p<0.05) differences observed in all parameters considered for carcass yield except for dressing percentage. T₅ had 14.05% for wings which was significantly (p<0.05) higher than the control 13.02%. For thigh, drum stick and back cut, T₅ (17.92, 16.71 and 19.13) compared (p>0.05) with the control (17.03, 16.03 and 20.28). There were significant differences observed in all parameters considered for organ weight except for lungs and kidney. T₁ had 1.99 for liver which was significantly (p<0.05) lower than T₂ (2.52) and T₅ (2.33) but compared with T₃ (2.07) and T₄ (1.99). The result showed that T₁(birds fed soya bean based diet) performed better in all parameters considered and that Mucuna sloanei inclusion up to 10% in broiler diet even when mix with enzyme could not compare with birds fed soya bean based diet.
